  1. while the new logo is a major improvement, its still not perfect. the
outline font, while distinctive outlined font just looks bad. the
kerning still is slightly odd too. I would have spread at least one of
the words out a bit more.

some of the positives of this design are their universalizing their
color palette. much better pictures. the use of white space gives it a
much better open feeling that i personally am a fan of. its very
    minimal in that aspect.

  3. First of all, the lettering for the new packaging does grab my attention, primarily because of the word "great." When I look at the overall logo, however, I know there is something definitely wrong, or unappealing I should say. The word "great" is bigger than "value," which might not be a problem if the main points of type where a bit more clear. For example, if "value" would begin at the end mark of the G in "great" and then flush right with the word itself. The colors are better coordinated which makes it a cleaner look and a distinquishable brand.

  4. Walmart's new packaging is an improvement. Photography in the new packaging is much better and pleasing to the eye. They have simplified their packaging design, much like Tropicana did, by having a lot of white space and sans serif type. While the white space looks okay for some products like the pizza shown above, other products like the jelly look a little awkward. In the article they used the word 'anticeptic.' I think it's because the white space can be overwhelming for some. It may be able stand out in a grocery isle, but it doesn't mean that the product looks appetizing.

  5. the new packaging makes it look cheaper but at the same time it stands out from the other brands. the large amount of white space makes it look different from others packages. honestly, the outline type can be improve but over all i think i have improve for better.

  6. The new design is way better than the old one. The old kind of reminds of a can of sardines only at the top though. The logo reads better going horizontal than going vertical. The new color scheme also makes the packaging look clear as well. The old packaging does not look appetizing to me. It look like all the type is pointing to the food on the package too. If that was there intention then good times for that. Over all the new design just looks like it's healthier to eat Vs. the old design does.

  7. I my opinion, the reason why the word "Great" is in white with a blue stroke is because Great isnt the main word in this title. Even though it's bold and stands out! But if you stand back and look at the title "Great Value". Great tends to blend in with the background. Value catches my eye first and value is the word the want you to notice. Especially in this economy.

As for the package,, it seems bland and to the point. Walmart knows, you know that this is a generic brand. People don't buy generic for its fancy labels. They buy their products because of the value. The white background helps you focus on the product not the packaging.

"Great food affordable prices" it says to me!

  8. The old packaging looked vintage already. the new packaging is straight to the point. And it looks like a "generic" packaging should look like. Plain and simple, its not about designing a master piece but communicating to the consumer that "that is cheap cheese" or whatever. Over all it looks good. not great. but great isn't expected from a generic brand. so in terms of what they were trying to do or what i think they were trying to do, its good.

  9. I can see that there is a lot more free space. The value and the food(pic) you get is more visible. Possibly better for point of sale but the other style is closer to a more popular brand(spam).

  10. All great comments above!

The white space does give a more open feeling; it's very airy and will probably stand out among competitors' products on the shelf.

    "Great Value"
Yuck to outline type… reminds me of a coloring book. But the new outline treatment is an improvement over the old one. Yes, the horizontal type reads better than the vertical/sideways type. Tight kerning where letters overlap seems fine to me.

Question: Why is Great Value flush right, when all the other text is flush left?

I agree the food doesn't look appetizing. Probably a low photoshoot budget. The lighting is flat…but that's another topic.

A big pat on the back to everyone who figured out that there is a time and place for "not-so-great-design." This does clearly get the message across that it's generic and cheap. And you're absolutely right that the old luncheon meat package closely resembles Spam's packaging with the dark blue strip of color and yellow type.

You're all getting awesome at observing. This awareness is going to start showing up in and improving your designs. Keep it up!

  11. It was a much much MUCH better design than the old one. The old one looked well...old. No one wants to eat old meat. It reminds me too much of a cheap WWI sardines container. It's definitely not appealing. The "Great Value" logo on the old one was difficult to read since it was place sideways. Also, that particular font type and coloring didn't look good with the blue background. I like the new design because of the wide open space and the very modern looking design. The picture in the background looks SO much more appealing and tasty than the old one. I like the sans serif font they used. It's just a lot more inviting and if I bought it, I wouldn't be as embarrassed at the check out counter.

  12. Is great in improvement what they did, its look more professional and by the looks of it if I ever see this two at the store I would rather buy the one. It has this warm feeling where I want to buy it and eat it. (I say this because I am a picky eater when it come to meat and if I font like the picture I won’t eat it.) I love the white space they use.
